Award Shows
Every year, organizations from around the USA (mostly centered in Hollywood) gather to recognize achievements in the motion picture industry. They recognize individuals and teams who they feel have delivered a truly outstanding experience with their film. Whether it's awarding a director, an actor, an actress, a costume designer or someone else, these awards have gone on to garner lasting fame for those that have received these awards.
On the flip side, there are some organizations, like the Razzies, which award the exact opposite - the worst of the worst for that year in motion pictures. Many shun these ceremonies, but those that accept the award have become bigger stars because of it (Halle Berry, for example, famously accepted her award in person for Catwoman - and has gone on to achieve even more fame because of it).
- Also known as the Oscars, these award shows, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, are the biggest star-studded events of the group. The award ceremony usually takes place in March.
Academy Awards
- Presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, these awards have been around since 1944, and the winners usually help predict the Academy Awards (although there have been some surprises). The award ceremony usually takes place in January.
Golden Globes
- These awards are presented by the Critics Choice Association (CCA), a "group of broadcast, radio and online" critics and journalists. These have gained popularity over the years, with many films now notating a nomination on film posters. They are usually awarded in January of each year.
Critics Choice Awards
- Hosted by the British Academy of Film and Televsion Arts (BAFTA), these awards are the biggest given in the UK. Prior to 2001, the award ceremony took place in April or May, but they are now presented in February.
BAFTA Film Awards
- MTV started their own Film Awards program in 1992 (later expanded to include TV). MTV picks the nominees, and visitors to their website can vote for their favorites While it doesn't take place every year (they are skipping 2024, for instance), this much less serious ceremony (which includes an award for "best kiss") usually takes place in May.
MTV Movie & TV Awards
- Better known as the Razzies, these awards honor the worst films and performances of the year. Presented by the Golden Raspberry Award Organization, the "winners" are usually announced the day before the Academy Awards.
